Do you open the SMS Methodology PDF and get overwhelmed before you even begin. Let alone the pages of point values to scroll through and hope you figure out what you are looking for? I know that the first time I viewed that document I inwardly groaned. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the point values, in what I hope is an easy to read format.

Please note that I have separated out three areas and placed them into their own documents for ease of the readers use.

Hazardous material violations and vehicle violations, both where the driver receives the CSA points, are in separate documents. As is a list of all violations in which only the company receives the CSA points.

Driving Violations (Driver Receives Points)

10 Points

  • Reckless driving - 392.2
  • Speeding 15 or more mph - 392.2
  • Speeding in construction zones - 392.2
  • Driving after being declared out of service - 395.13
  • Driver uses or is in possession of drugs - 392.4
  • Violating an out-of-service order for improper alcohol use - 392.5

7 Points

  • Speeding 11 to 14 mph - 392.2
  • Adverse driving condition violations (Alaska) - 395.1

5 Points

  • Failure to obey a traffic control device - 392.2
  • Following too close - 392.2
  • Improper lane change - 392.2
  • Improper passing - 392.2
  • Railroad grade crossing violation -392.2
  • Improper turns - 392.2
  • Failure to yield the right-of-way - 392.2
  • Bus failing to stop at a railroad crossing - 392.10
  • Chlorine load failing to stop at a railroad crossing - 392.10
  • Placard load failing to stop at a railroad crossing - 392.10
  • Failing to use caution in hazardous conditions - 392.14
  • Using or equipping a radar detector in a CMV - 392.71
  • Driver is in possession of, currently using, or under the influence of alcohol in the 4 hour immediately preceding coming on-duty - 392.5

4 Points

  • Speeding between 6 and 10 miles per hour (mph) - 392.2
  • Operating as an interstate driver under the age of 21 - 391.11
  • Non-English speaking driver - 391.11
  • Failure to understand English language so as to decipher road signs and signals - 391.11

2 Points

  • Lacking physical qualifications - 391.11

E-Log and/or EOBR Violations (Driver Receives Points)

5 Points

  • Electronic on-board computer (EOBR) device information requirements not met - 395.15
  • EOBR device failure, and driver failure, to reconstruct duty status - 395.15

1 Point

  • EOBR device improper form and manner - 395.15
  • EOBR device information not available - 395.15

Hours of Service Violations (Driver Receives Points)

10 Points

  • Operating a CMV while ill or fatigued - 392.3

7 Points

  • Violating state and/or local hours of service (HOS) laws - 392.2
  • 15, 20, 70/80 HOS violations (Alaska-Property) - 395.1
  • 16 hour rule violation - 395.1
  • Requiring or permitting a driver to drive over 11 hours - 395.3
  • 11 hour rule violation - 395.3
  • Requiring or permitting a driver to drive past 14 hours on-duty - 395.3
  • 14 hour rule violation - 395.3
  • 60/70 hour rule violation - 395.3
  • 34 hour restart violation - 395.3
  • Violating HOS (migrant worker) - 398.6

Mobile Device Violations (Driver Receives Points)

10 Points

  • Using a mobile phone while operating a CMV - 392.82
  • Motor Carrier (MC) either requiring or allowing a driver to use a mobile phone while driving a CMV - 392.82
  • Texting while operating a CMV - 390.17

Paperwork Violations (Driver Receives Points)

8 Points

  • Operating a CMV with more than one driver's license - 383.21
  • Operating a CMV without a CDL - 383.23
  • Operating a CMV with only a learners permit - 383.23
  • Operating a CMV with a disqualified CDL - 383.51
  • Driving a CMV while CDL is suspended for a safety-related or unknown reason and in the state of driver's license issuance - 383.51
  • Operating a CMV with an improper CDL classification - 383.91

7 Points

  • Falsified logs - 395.8

5 Points

  • No record of duty status - 395.8
  • Log not current to most recent duty status - 395.8
  • Missing previous 7 days logs - 395.8
  • Driving a CMV while CDL is suspended for a non-safety-related reason and in the state of driver's license issuance - 383.51
  • Driving a CMV while CDL is suspended for a safety-related or unknown reason and outside the state of driver's license issuance - 383.51

4 Points

  • Drivers must have knowledge of, and comply with, regulations - 396.11
  • Missing or inadequate driver vehicle inspection report - 396.11
  • Missing reviewing driver's signature on the driver vehicle inspection report - 396.13

2 Points

  • Driver not physically qualified - 398.3

1 Point

  • General form and manner log violation - 395.8
  • Driving a CMV while CDL is suspended for a non-safety-related reason and outside the state of driver's license issuance - 383.51
  • Driver not in possession of a valid medical card - 391.41
  • Driver not in possession of a medical waiver (when required) - 391.49

Bus Violations (Driver Receives Points)

10 Points

  • Operating a bus while fatigued - 392.3
  • Pushing and/or towing a loaded bus - 392.63

8 Points

  • Operating a school bus without a school bus endorsement - 383.93
  • Bus tire regrooved or is a recap on the front wheel - 393.75

7 Points

  • 15, 20, 70/80 HOS violations (Alaska-Passenger) - 395.1
  • 10 hour rule violation - 395.5
  • 15 hour rule violation - 395.5
  • 60/70 hour rule violation - 395.5

4 Points

  • None, or defective, bus front brake line protection - 393.44

3 Points

  • Violation of bus heater fuel tank location - 393.77

2 Points

  • Bus driveshaft not properly protected - 393.89
  • Missing or obscured standee line - 393.9
  • Improper aisle seats - 393.91
  • Seatbelts not installed - 393.93

1 Point

  • Unsafe bus operations - 392.62
  • Standees forward of the standee line on a bus - 392.62
  • Baggage and/or freight restricts the driver's operation - 392.62
  • Exits are obstructed by either baggage or freight - 392.62
  • Passengers are not protected from falling baggage - 392.62
  • Either none, or defective, bus emergency exits on buses manufactured on or after 09/01/1994 - 393.62
